It states for instance the following: “ The authors conclude that viral simplicity is a consequence of parasitism, not antiquity”. I don’t fully understand the apparently contradictory viewpoint of this article about whether viruses are alive or not. The information in the link is interesting This quote is part of an argument why viruses do not represent lineages but includes a description of what endy was saying. The absence of evidence is not the evidence of absence. But is this happening spontaneously and preprogrammed? I really can't tell, but I'm not convinced yet that this is indeed the case. The Mexican flu for instance was a combination of swine flu, bird flu and human flu. Animal flu viruses can mix with human flu virus to create a whole new hybrid (reassortment). Influenza continuously mutates its genome (antigene drift). Viruses do show activity, but whether this is intentional or not is hard to say. It doesn't seem too far-fetched to suggest that this single stranded RNA, at some point, must have developed a capsid, even though viruses without any protein coating (viroids) still exist. The RNA world hypothesis on the other hand is widely accepted. I really thought that the scientific community would know where viruses come from, since all the other organisms seem to have their place in cladistics. Here's a Nature article on the three main hypotheses,of which, CharonY has already mentioned one: If viruses indeed didn't evolve first, does the conclusion of this research imply that giruses (giant viruses that don’t behave as metabolic limited as general viruses) went from complex structures to simpler ones….and back to complex structures again? Because that doesn't make a whole lot of sense to me. Viruses have gradually shed genes they found they didn’t need, until they could no longer even reproduce on their own.īut how did viruses evolve? Complex organisms were simpler in the past, so how close are viruses related to archaea? Archaea show resemblances with eukaryotes, and 8% of our eukaryotic genome is made up of viral genes, but could some of those viral genes actually have been within us since that first sell-replicating RNA cell near black smokers? Could the phylogenetic tree be actually upside down, and instead of a common ancestor that split into bacteria on the left, and archaea/eukaryotes on the right, archaea and viruses were genetically much closer, and split into bacteria/eukaryotes? But while, like humans, like bacteria evolved to become more complex, viruses became simpler. Instead, viruses and bacteria both descended from an ancient cellular life form. Viruses did not evolve first, they found. Were viruses the first free-living cells? Scientist Gustavo Caetano-Anolles and his colleagues at the University of Illinois reached another conclusion after pioneering a new way to map the microbial family tree. Single stranded RNA with a membrane does remind of the structure of a viruses, so the question rises whether life started as a virus. So there was autotrophic RNA as well as chemoautotrophic microbes (archaea) below the ocean in the Earth’s lithosphere, which is the home of these extremophiles, archaea, that show more metabolic similarities with eukaryotes than with bacteria. Günter Wächtershäuser proposed that RNA cell membranes could have developed near black smokes. ![]() Life started as as self-replicating single stranded RNA. The earnings from the marketplace would be split between the mod/content developers and Epic in order to earn revenue from the game. He also discussed the creation of a marketplace where developers, modders, artists, and gamers could exchange mods and content. Polge stated that the project would take many months before the game would be playable by gamers, and that the game would be available to download for free. Development was focused on Windows, Mac, and Linux, although it is currently not known if the game will receive a port to eighth-generation consoles. The development team aimed for the game to be true to its roots as a competitive FPS, with no drastic changes to the series' arena-based gameplay. All code and content was made available to Unreal Engine 4 developers on GitHub. Anyone from the community who had knowledge of the Unreal Engine was invited to participate in the development of the game, collaborating with one another through discussion boards. The game was built by the developers from scratch, using leftovers from Unreal Tournament 3 as placeholders. Work began with a relatively small development team mainly composed of Unreal Tournament veteran players, fans, and Unreal Engine 4 developers. The source code of the game is published on GitHub. Epic Games has been using forums for discussions and Twitch livestreams for regular updates. Its development is crowdsourced and open to contribution from anyone. The development for the game started on May 8, 2014, with a message from Steven Polge detailing how the project will be handled with the community, following the commercial failure of Unreal Tournament 3. The present study was aimed at getting more insight into the relationship between the outward body (orientation to outward appearance), the inner body (body awareness), and gender. Only two scales (EI and SO) fail to attain this criterion, but only marginally, and the lower value of the alpha coefficient for these two Discussion Table 1 gives the values of Cronbach’s alpha for each scale.įrom this table it can be seen that most scales have a satisfactory level of internal consistency with an alpha coefficient higher than 0.80. Measures were selected reflecting the following concepts: orientation to outward appearance, body awareness, symptom perception, negative affectivity, body (dis)satisfaction, somatization, and ResultsĪs a preliminary to the statistical analysis, a reliability analysis was performed on each scale in order to assess its internal consistency and homogeneity. The majority of the respondents was born in the Netherlands (95%). Mean age of the men was 20.0 years (S.D.=3.15) old, that of the women 20.50 (S.D.=3.98) the difference did not reach statistical significance. Respondents were college students, 250 men and 275 women. The results further indicate that the competion of cues model is valid only under certain conditions. It was concluded that, in students, the internal and outward body are experienced as a unity. Women’s as well as men’s symptom perception was, additionally, positively related to somatization, negative affectivity, and body dissatisfaction. Body awareness and symptom perception were positively related, without any gender-effect. Orientation to outward appearance, external information and somatization had positive effects on body awareness, that were unaffected by gender. No sex differences were found in negative affectivity there was a trend toward a difference regarding somatization. Women compared with men appeared to be more oriented to and less satisfied with their outward appearances, and they were higher in body awareness, symptom perception, and external information. Questionnaires were administered reflecting all concepts under study. Respondents were 250 male and 275 female college students (mean age 20.4). Furthermore, we hypothesized that both relationships would be stronger for women than for men. We expected a negative relationship between orientation to outward appearance and body awareness, and a positive one between body awareness and symptom perception. ![]() ![]() The present study aimed to investigate the relationship between orientation to outward appearance, body awareness, symptom perception, and gender, from Pennebaker’s competition of cues model (1982).
