Tl dr: Anyone have suggestions for decent, affordable masthead-appropriate anemometers and vanes that don't come with the added cost of proprietary gauges since I already have analog gauges available? What I want to know is if anyone has experience buying a low ish (not quite el cheapo Amazon) cost replacement/standalone sensor anemometer or vane for their masthead. I've looked it up and it seems there are a plethora of available sensors out there at all price ranges with the right outputs, and voltages can easily be modified with resistors on a new PCB that would be pennies. Our other boat (C&C24) has squat for instruments. Both analogs have the typical analog inputs - voltage from what is effectively a tiny generator at the top of the mast for the anemometer, and five leads for the direction sensor. We have an old but functional RayMarine system that replaced them before the time of the co-op. Our bigger boat (Catalina 30) has two old, disused analog instruments for windspeed and direction. I have already done some other weird DIY sensor stuff (rebuilding an old 4-stroke gas tach to appropriately display RPM on an old inboard diesel). ![]() I am one of the people in charge of maintenance in a sailing co-op with a very limited budget. Our issue is that Mission Planner does not seem to output the corresponding values (wind direction fluctuates randomly between 0 and 360, whether the anemometer is plugged in or not) and rpm1 continues to be at either 0 or -1 (the wind velocity tab is unresponsive as well).I am not quite as crazy as the title will imply. When connected to the Pixhawk, a multimeter shows the correct potentiometer voltage response to wind vane movement. All of our connections seem to work when using an Arduino. We decided to power and ground through the servo rail instead, as we found that the voltage supplied by the ADC was rather unstable. We currently have these parameters set in Mission Planner: We were able to calibrate the wind vane after checking the messages tab, but the calibrated max voltage is 2 times (5.8 V) what we are measuring with our multimeter (2.9 V) on the output of the wind vane. And calculate the appropriate RPM scaling factor to get the wind speed in meter per second. Then you just have to change WNDVN_SPEED_TYPE to 3. ![]() Then you should see the rpm value changing in mission planner as you spin the cups, you can double click on one of the things in the quick tab to change it to rpm1 And you will have to check you RELAY_PIN, RELAY_PIN2 ect are not set to 55 so the pin is free to use for rpm ![]() I would suggest pin 6, this would be:īRD_PWM_COUNT will have to be 5 or less, i think its 4 by default so leave it at that. For the speed you will have to connect to an aux port pin. That sounds good, you might have to check if the ADC is rated for 5v, it could be 3.3v only, i can’t remember. Again, any help would be greatly appreciated! We were thinking of connecting the wind direction analog output along with power and ground to the ADC port, but are unsure of how to also connect the digital wind speed output as well.
